THE ARTS: Programs, not individual artists, will divvy up $50 million

The $787 billion stimulus law included about $50 million in funding for the arts. Like the Great Depression’s Federal One arts funding programs, the stimulus bill aims to create or save jobs in the arts. But the stimulus bill diverges from the Federal One program — it offers grants to arts programs through the National Endowment for the Arts while President Franklin Roosevelt’s arts funding gave money directly to artists.
