WASHINGTON — In a city known for its free museums, there’s still one you may have missed. The Transportation Walk, a series of outdoor exhibits tracking America’s evolution in travel, sits around the perimeter of the Department of Transportation headquarters at 1200 New Jersey Ave, SE, near D.C.’s Navy Yard and Nationals Park.
Part of an effort to revitalize the area, the museum captures how we get around, from train to tandem bicycle, and celebrates the pioneers who got us there. While it’s been around for five years, the museum doesn’t have a website and its traffic comes from visitors to the ballpark or area employees, said John Wilson, property manager of JBG Companies, which owns the Transportation Department building. But as the area–and talk of the museum–grows, Wilson said he was inspired to help launch a website. Local employees said the area needs this museum and expect it will become more popular in the coming years.
