WASHINGTON- The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosted presidential candidate John Kasich this week for a Q&A session about important Latino issues.
Kasich is the governor of Ohio and one of 15 candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination.
One of Kasich’s rivals, Donald Trump, has pushed immigration to the front of the campaign debate since making controversial comments about Mexican immigrants.
But Kasich took a different stance. “For those that are here that have been law abiding, God bless them. They’re a critical part of our society from doctors to engineers,” he said. “Then I think they should have a path to legalization,” he added.
Trump has supported mass deportations of those who entered the country illegally.
But Kasich opposes such a policy. “There are families here that live in fear of being divided. I mean can you imagine being a six, or seven, or eight year old kid and being told they’re going to ship your dad out. That is just unacceptable in America,” Kasich said. The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has hosted similar events with presidential candidates like Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and Sen. Ted Cruz.
