WASHINGTON — Fire departments across the country can apply for fire prevention and safety funding through the Association for Firefighters Grant program.

North Dakota Senator John Hoeven announced a plan to give fire departments across the country millions of dollars for fire safety and prevention training. Hoeven is the Chairman of the US Senate Appropriations Committee on Homeland Security. The 34 million dollars in funding comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA.

Hoeven says the funding is crucial to the safety of first responders. “For any type of emergency we need to know that firefighters are there and that they have the training and equipment they need to do the job.”

Across the United States more than 80 percent of firefighters are volunteers.
