WASHINGTON – Activists rallied for the late Honduran environmental activist Berta Cáceres in the nation’s capital.
Cáceres was the founder and general secretary of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras, or COPINH. She was killed on March 3, 2016 at her home in Honduras after receiving death threats, sexual violence threats, and harassment.
The activists and demonstrators – about 30 at the April 18 protest – are seeking justice on behalf of the activist. They want the United States to stop aid to Honduras and push for a full investigation of her death.
Berta Cáceres had been receiving protection from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights since 2009.
Since the coup in 2009, Honduras has become one of the world’s most dangerous countries for human rights activists, according to a Global Witness report.
