NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Even though Ohio eighth-grader Ryan Staton tripped on the word “ceraceous,” the speller says he was in the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the experience more than the price. Ryan was eliminated in the second round.
“[I] never really imagine of getting to this level and getting to experience this with Ryan is really something,” says Ryan’s mother Kelly Staton.
Ohio had more spellers than any other state in the nation at the Bee. Three students from Ohio are still remaining in the competition with total for 45 finalists from across the country.
The first place winner will take home the trophy and $40,000 in cash.
