We asked one simple question of attendees and panelists at religious events surrounding the National Equality March on Oct. 11.
Responses touched on the struggle for ordination of gay ministers, the importance of justice and the power of a supportive environment.

“How do religious values affect your support for equal rights?”

Thoughts from a Jewish celebration

People eagerly shared their views on the importance of equal rights and the National Equality March as the large event approached in the second week of October.

Jews from across the nation came together for a queer-themed celebration of the Simchat Torah holiday on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Jewish Community Center in Washington. Small groups of long-time friends and new acquaintances mingled, and many said they appreciated being surrounded by people who were like them.

Some saw Jewish values as dictating the equality of all people, and others appreciated the fact that those in their local communities helped them to feel supported as they were growing up.

Friends and families of Jewish gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people came to the celebration even if they were not themselves Jewish, and said they wanted to show support for the faith their loved ones practiced.

Sharing experiences from church life

At local churches throughout the weekend, people poured their hearts out at open forums held to discuss the intersection of religious and LGBT life, and what people could do to encourage social action in their churches on a local level.
