WASHINGTON – How hard is it to compete in not one – but three – Scripps National Spelling Bee competitions?

Just ask Rose Tracy, a 13-year-old speller from Anaconda, Mont.

Tracy was one of 274 spellers who came to Washington, D.C. last week from around the world to compete. Only 48 spellers advanced to the semi-final round of the competition. Tracy was not one of them.

But she said being Montana’s only speller in the Bee was still an honor.

“Everyone back there is really supportive,” she said. “They’ve just been really helpful with everything.”

Fourteen-year-old Anamika Veeramani of North Royalton, Ohio took the top prize.
