WASHINGTON -The nation’s capital is one of the most influential cities in the world. Well-tailored blue suits and red ties are a favorite among the men and structured shift dresses with pearl earrings are dominant with the women. A local poet and choreographer said D.C.’s power is depicted in its fashion stereotype.
“There is a buddy system,” said Lester Reed. “If your buddy wears a suit everyday, so do I. So D.C. is very corporate and conservative.”
Chester Gordon, 18, agrees. But he said the local style is evolving, starting with accessories.
“I think D.C. is kind of late on style compared to others,” said Gordon. “But I mean, we’re getting there -slowly, but surely. I like it when you wear something simple and then add a statement accessory.”
Many residents in the Dupont Circle area said there are many that break the stereotype.
Student Laura Minskoff said, “The style seems very casual, comfortable, effortless. People definitely have their own kind of individuality and look.”
