Mohammed Oumer Abda who is of Oromo descent was one of the students who was able to escape the 2001 Ethiopian student massacre and flee to Kenya. In October 2010, Mohammed and his family moved to Riverdale, Maryland. The recent crackdown in Ethiopia against the Oromo students brings back sad memories. Although life has not been easy, he says, he feels more secure in the United States than he did in Ethiopia.
