WASHINGTON–The Fisher House launched its “Hotel for Heroes” program Monday in partnership with six nationwide hotel chains. The program is an expansion of Hero Miles, which allows people to donate unused frequent flyer miles to wounded veterans and their families, in order to help defer (or completely cover) the costs of traveling to and from military hospitals and treatment centers. Now those same families have the option to stay in a hotel near their beloved soldier, as many of the existing housing programs have been overcrowded and overstretched for some time. Some soldiers have refused to accept the best treatment possible in order to stay near their families, a problem that wounded veteran Chaz Allen says this program will help to eradicate.
