WASHINGTON — Smoking marijuana on federal land in Washington is illegal, but hundreds of activists Saturday ignored the law and smoked pot in front of the White House. None were arrested.

Organizers, who helped legalize recreational use of pot in the District of Columbia last year, arranged a smoking session with a 51-foot inflatable joint that read: ‘Obama, deschedule cannabis now!’ They want President Barack Obama to loosen marijuana laws and remove the plant from the schedule one drug list, which includes drugs like heroin, LSD and bath salts.

Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington are the only states that have allowed recreational use of marijuana while 23 states have allowed the use of medical marijuana.

North Dakota is known for having some of the harshest marijuana laws in the nation.
