Hidden in a busy district in Washington D.C., the trolley tunnel has had few visitors in the last 50 years.
The tunnel was built in 1949. As the number of riders declined, the service stopped in 1962. It was turned into a food court in 1995 but failed shortly after it was opened.
Now, one organization is trying to change that. Dupont Underground wants to transfrom the abandoned space into an art platform for the city. This project is called “Raise/Raze.”
The process involved hundreds of volunteers. They spent a month gluing more than 650,000 plastic balls together into cubes. “Raise/Raze” is a design by two artists from New York, whose plan stood out among others in 2014. After volunteers made the cubes, the artists built the structures.
The exhibition is open to the public April 30 through June 1, 2016.
