CLEVELAND – Sen. Pat Roberts and Secretary of State Kris Kobach voiced confidence that the Republican party is in a good position heading into November.

They spoke at a breakfast event for the Kansas delegates to the Republican National Convention on Monday morning at the Fairfield Inn, Beachwood.

Kobach, an early supporter of presumptive nominee Donald Trump, said he has been to four conventions and is optimistic this time because of Trump.

He also talked about his work on the platform committee, talking about the need for a physical wall between Mexico and the United States, destruction of ISIS, teaching the Bible as literature in schools across the U.S. and condemning gay marriage.

The platform committee report is usually vague, but this one is specific and is written in plain terms, he said.

Roberts urged the delegates and voters to work to help Trump get the backing of the Senate and the House when he is elected.

“We have to save the Senate,” Roberts said. “If we don’t have the Senate and the House backing president Trump up, we won’t be able to accomplish the things we’d like to accomplish.”

He also said the party has to be united and support Trump.

Roberts urged the delegates to work hard for Sen. Jerry Moran, who faces challengers in the Aug. 2 primary and Nov. 8 general election.

The breakfast also saw speech by BNSF vice president Jeff Davis.
