CLEVELAND–The ability to absorb information and make quick decisions will allow GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump to make tough military choices, U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo said Wednesday.
“You have seen him make good decisions in his business life, his family life – with his children, so I am excited for a commander in chief who fearlessly puts America out in front,” Pompeo said in an interview.
Pompeo, R-Wichita, backed Marco Rubio before the Kansas presidential caucuses in March but said he now is focused on making Trump the next president.
He spoke to Kansas delegates to the Republican National Convention at a breakfast Wednesday, criticizing presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s handling of the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya in which four Americans died.
Pompeo also talked about Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence, the Indiana governor and former congressman. Pence had an congressional office near Pompeo’s when Pence was serving his last term and Pompeo was serving his first in the U.S. House.
Pence became a “friend and mentor,” he said.
“He is someone whose values, I think, are very much like those of us in Kansas,” Pompeo said.
Alan Cobb, the director of coalitions for the Trump campaign, also spoke to delegates, talking about how important it was for him to represent his home state in a national campaign.
Trump gave the people an opportunity to talk about issues, like immigration, they do not usually want to talk about, Cobb said.
“We have the most conservative platform maybe ever and Trump is a huge factor,” Cobb said.
U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts talked about the importance of unity in the party.
Trump’s appearance with his family has removed the sliver of misgivings he and a few Kansas delegates had about him, Roberts said.
“You take a man with a family like that, you know who he is and what kind of a candidate we have,” Roberts said. “I am much more optimistic now and unity is the most important need at the moment.”
