WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump will be about the facts and the constitution, not about his decision to withdraw troops from Syria.

“The impeachment is about the facts, their truths and the constitution,” she said in a speech to the Democratic National Committee’s Women’s Leadership.

Other issues, such as gun violence and the withdrawal of American troops from Syria “…are subjects for the election.” She also mourned the death early Thursday of Rep, Elijah Cummings, D-Md.

“We had a conference call on Friday with all the members in the House,” she said. “….He gave us his guidance, his report, full voice, full throttle, full values, full commitment, full strategy.”

Cummings, 68, died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore from complications concerning longstanding health issues.

“He fought it to the end, and he fought it with such dignity we didn’t even know,” Pelosi said. “We’ll always miss him, but his legacy will always be with the Congress.”

More than 100 bills have passed the House since the beginning of the year and many are waiting to be voted on in the Senate. For example, the Violence Against Women Act, a bill that had provided protections for victims of domestic violence since 1994, has yet to be reauthorized.

“The impeachment is about the facts, their truths and the constitution,” she said. Other issues, such as gun violence, the withdrawal of American troops from Syria, and gun violence, “…are subjects for the election.”

Pelosi announced in September that that the House would begin investigations into Trump’s efforts to have Ukraine investigate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

Many critics have raised concerns over how ongoing impeachment proceedings could interfere with the presidential election.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel tweeted Wednesday that “House Democrats’ impeachment ‘inquiry’ is violating norms and precedent” and that they “are denying Republicans and President Trump the same rights that Democrats and President Clinton received during those impeachment proceedings.”
