WASHINGTON — Democrats gained a Senate seat on Election Night when former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper unseated incumbent Sen. Cory Gardner, but Sen. Lindsey Graham held onto his seat, still leaving the Democrats three seats short of gaining control of the Senate.
In order to gain control of the Senate, Democrats need to pick up four seats if President Donald Trump wins reelection or three seats should former Vice President Joe Biden win the president and Sen. Kamala Harris becomes vice president and Senate president.
The Associated Press has not called several toss-up Senate races that Democrats had targeted, including those in Arizona, Iowa, Maine and North Carolina.
In a video statement, Hickenlooper said he is “honored by the trust you have placed in me and I’m deeply committed to the job ahead
Republicans did hold off challenges from Democrats in South Carolina and Texas with both Lindsey Graham and Sen. John Cornyn winning reelection. Republicans also picked up a seat in Alabama with Tommy Tuberville defeating incumbent Sen. Doug Jones.
