WASHINGTON — Progressive lawmakers and activists met at the steps of the Supreme Court on Tuesday to advocate for expanding the number of justices on the nation’s highest court.

“Adding four seats to the Supreme Court is how we restore justice, balance and legitimacy to it and that’s exactly what our Judiciary Act will do,” said Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass. The senator sponsored a bill to increase the number of justices on the Supreme Court from nine to 13 in an effort to shift the ideology of the court away from its current conservative majority.

The rally took place on the one-year anniversary of Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation to the court by the Senate.
