WASHINGTON — Relatives of those who have died from the opioid epidemic urged the Department of Justice on Friday to prosecute the Sackler family for their role in the epidemic.
The Sacklers owned Purdue Pharma, the company that developed the painkiller OxyContin. For years, Purdue Pharma falsely marketed OxyContin as being less addictive than other opioids.
While the company has since been dissolved and executives have faced charges of criminal misbranding, the Sackler family has not faced criminal charges.
