Hooksiel, Germany – After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the German government decided it was time to wean itself off its reliance on Russian oil. As an alternative, the government has turned to liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a new energy source and has started to build LNG terminals along its coastlines. Yet, one of Germany’s first LNG terminals is dangerously close to a protected wildlife area. This terminal may have several environmental implications on the ecology surrounding it. Locals and climate activists are now working to protect it.
