WASHINGTON — High work-related death rates given by a report released Thursday, May 8, by the AFL-CIO show that North Dakota is the most deadly state to work in. The AFL-CIO report entitled, “Death on The Job: The Toll of Neglect,” show a 43 percent increase from 2011 to 2012 in North Dakota and between 2007 and 2012, work – related deaths rose from 25 to 65. At 17.7 per 100,000, the North Dakota work-related death rate is the highest job fatality rate in the country and more than five times the national average. The organization says this increase is one of the highest they they have ever seen and that more than half of the deaths occur in the oil and gas industry. AFL-CIO Safety and Health Director, Peg Seminario said the high job-fatality rate is the result of growth of the oil and gas industry, lack of training, and lack of oversight.
