WASHINGTON — A Washington Mystics’ “W” seemed certain from the first whistle, but they put on a show for Camp Day anyway, routing the San Antonio Stars 84-67.

The Stars scored first, but never led for the rest of the game. Washington led by as many as 31 points, using a combination of sharp passes, penetrating drives and pinpoint shots to overwhelm the struggling Stars.

More than 4,000 campers from Maryland, Virginia and D.C. cheered “defense!” when the Mystics retreated and threw their hands up for every Washington three-pointer. But many campers said their favorite part was the half-time dog show, in which several trained poodles, pomereanians and other canines jumped over objects, balanced on their hind legs and walked backward on wheels.

With the win, the Mystics (9-8) held on to the fifth seed in the WNBA playoff race and moved above .500 for the first time this season. The Stars (3-12) stumbled to yet another road loss, keeping them winless on the road for the season.

The Mystics next play the Chicago Sky in Illinois on Friday.
