WASHINGTON — Chris Bowers’ life changed forever in 2008.

A member of the Marine Corps’ 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, he lost his left leg after being wounded in Haditha, a city in Iraq’s Anbar province that experienced some of the war’s most ferocious violence. Following his recovery, which included relearning how to walk, Bowers, 30, has found a new lease on life doing one of his favorite things: playing golf.

Bowers, from Fredericksburg, Virginia, was medically retired as a corporal after nearly eight years of military service. Now he spends his days supporting other wounded veterans and collaborating with PGA HOPE, a program that leverages golf to promote vets’ “mental, social, physical and emotional well-being.”

From the PGA’s website:

The program includes a working partnership with physical therapists, introduction of the participant to the sport of golf, golf instruction, playing opportunities and social events. … Programs take place in local markets nationally and are fully funded for military and their families’ participation.

The organization aims to have a program in every state by next year.
