In Matanzas, Cuba workers handcraft books at the government owned publishing house Ediciones Vigías. They primarily use recycled materials and publish in both Spanish and English. Hugo Santana is an engineer by day and a poet by night, and has been published by Ediciones Vigía. Here he reads a portion of his poem “Luxury Items,” a reflection on scarcity in contemporary Cuba.
