WASHINGTON – Washington DC’s Gallaudet University offers education for the hard of hearing community. It also accepts hearing undergraduates (HUGs) capped at 8 percent of the undergrad population.
These students might be interested in American Sign Language or are children of deaf adults.
There has been controversy over whether the inclusion of hearing students will take away from Deaf culture. However, not all deaf students are against this policy, and HUGs continue to form part of the student life at Gallaudet.
