WASHINGTON — Activists gathered outside the White House on Tuesday called on President Biden to fight for the passage of two critical pieces of voting rights legislation.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which aims to restore the full protections of the original Voting Rights Act of 1965, is currently facing a Republican filibuster after passing the House in August.
The Freedom to Vote Act, which would counteract recently passed state laws restricting voter access, was introduced last month but also remains stalled.
Biden strongly supports both bills, but activists on Tuesday called on him to “fix or nix” the filibuster in order to ensure the passage of the two pieces of legislation, which would ensure greater voting rights protections for all Americans.
