WASHINGTON — The best of the best were on exhibit at the White House Science Fair, showcasing winners of Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) competitions from across the country. More than 100 participated in projects that were on display at the fourth anniversary of the White House Science Fair. The annual event is an arm of the President’s Educate to Innovate campaign. President Obama gave remarks about placing just as much importance on celebrating technical and academic achievements that is placed on athletic. This year’s science fair was focused on bridging the gender gap in technical fields, to inspire women and girls in STEM subjects.
The White House Science Fair showcased several projects including one by 18-year-old Eric Chen from California, whose influenza discoveries led to developments to help speed up diagnosing the flu recently won the Google Science fair contest. Another 18-year-old, Elana Simon of New York’s quest for a cure for her cancer lead her to achieve major developments in liver cancer research and advances in early identification of the disease.
