WASHINGTON – If you happened to be walking by the White House and spotted a group of 30 young men in purple stepping their hearts out, it was probably the Omega Lamplighters.
The group traveled 18 hours last weekend from Pensacola on their annual “500 Miles of Freedom, College & Civil Rights Tour,” sponsored by the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. The Omega Lamplighters is a youth leadership program designed to “turn good young men into great young men.”
For almost all of the members that attended the trip, it was their first time visiting the nation’s capital.
“Performing in front of the White House…I don’t know if I’ll ever do something like that again,” says 16-year-old Dwayne Kelley, vice president of the Omega Lamplighters-Pensacola Chapter. “That’s the top. I don’t know where else we can go from now.”
